So the satnav said go up that ramp and park. With slight note of caution I did as I was told. I entered an empty shopping arcade – but hey they had chocolates and a shoe shop so what could go wrong - had to have some of those!
Irene Yoong-Henery has mentioned on a number of occasions that we were “going to go big" or she would have failed. Well she didn't fail. What an event. Held in the fabulous “Apartment" at Resorts World Birmingham, Irene had persuaded sponsors to support the evening and therefore costs were kept very low.
The speakers were truly inspirational:
AFIA SIRKHOT spoke about running McDonalds franchises for nearly 17 years. She bought her first restaurant in 2002 and has grown that to six restaurants with over 600 employees and a turnover of over £20 million. When she went to her first interview with McDonalds it was her husband at the time who pitched. He didn't get the franchise but they phoned and asked her to run it. Her personal accounts of the highs and lows of business, including a run in with a knife wielding youth where she told him to “go away" made the audience both sit in aware and laugh as she spoke.
SYLVIA HOWORTH spoke about being a destitute widow at age 35 with 2 boys aged 3 and 5 years old, and how she turned into a successful eBay internet trader selling model boats to the USA, Canada and the UK when the market changed so did her business idea and she reinvented herself as a millionaire property developer with numerous properties near the University of Birmingham.
MICHELLE NICKLIN the Founder of Sandstone Yoga & Pilates which she started in her attic partly because everyone around her said that she couldn't do it. She opened the first Yoga Teacher Training Academy in the West Midlands.
